Choosing a breakdown cover is not as easy as it seems on the surface and their are certain things that you need to consider when making your decision. The first decision to make is whether you should be covering yourself or just your vehicle. Most of the main breakdown cover providers will only offer one of these options so it may involve changing your allegiance to another breakdown provider. The benefits of both are apparent but overall the benefits of having a cover for you as a person are more so, providing you with the additional security of having support even when in someone else's car.

It all depends on your circumstances, if you have multiple cars, if you travel in different cars regularly, if you travel as a passenger with others regularly are all things that should be considered before deciding. The RAC for example, only provide cover for the individual meaning if you are travelling with someone else and breakdown, you can still call on your breakdown cover. On the other hand, Green Flag and the AA only provide cover for the individual vehicle. This may well be all that you need, particularly if you are sharing the car as this provides the breakdown cover not just for you but for every driver who uses that vehicle.

Be sure to consider all the options that are available to you in your breakdown cover, as the old saying goes "you get what you pay for". That’s not to say that you should accept the first offer that you get as you can save considerably by selecting the right provider, but if you choose the cheapest breakdown cover available it is unlikely that you will get the comprehensive level of cover that most require.

Don’t be dragged in by the companies marketing schemes either. All breakdown cover companies quote their average call out times to display how good they are with many being as low as half an hour, with almost every provider being under an hour. It’s important to remember that whilst these are not lies, when breakdowns are near recovery agents that the breakdown cover provider uses, these can often be as little as 5 or 10 minutes. So whilst the average is half an hour, there are plenty that are within 5 or 10 minutes but also plenty that are over an hour. A long time to be sat on the roadside. So don’t be enticed by these sales facts, choose one for the comprehensiveness of the cover and the reliability of the firm.
