There’s always plenty of resources and advice out their for car drivers looking to find out more about insurance or breakdown cover but theres a lot less for motorcycle riders who need the same support. One of the reasons for this is that there is a lot of similarities but there are also plenty of small differences.

One of the issues that needs to be considered when looking into breakdown cover is one that is shared by car drivers, deciding whether or not you wish to insure yourself as a driver or the bike itself. The benefit of having breakdown cover for your car is that if it is newer you may get a discount and it also entitles anyone who rides the bike to the same breakdown cover. If you insured yourself however, it is only you that has the breakdown cover.

What is best for your bike will eventually come down to how much you’re prepared to pay and how comprehensive a service you’ll need. Think about the cover you really need so that you don’t end up paying for expensive extras you won’t use, or end up needing something you don’t have.

The motorcycle breakdown cover can generally be separated into three different levels of comprehensiveness. The first is the very basic package that you can usually get from around £40 per year and would provide you with the guarantee that if your bike breaks down on the roadside, the company will send out a mechanic to help fix it. If they are unable to fix it at the roadside, they will then tow it to the nearest garage. The next stage up is more of a middle point, providing the beginner package but with a few useful additions, enabling you to recoup the costs of further travel from the roadside to your destination or home. Finally, the most comprehensive and consequently expensive option can provide cover that will enable you to ride your bike throughout most major European countries as well as a replacement hire car whilst your bike is being repaired. The downside is that you can be looking at around £150 for this level of breakdown cover.

The downside of motorcycle breakdown cover is that due to the more unique nature of the job, with specialist motorcycle mechanics being used where possible, the breakdown cover providers will often take longer to reach you at the roadside then if you were in a car, with response times around the hour mark not quite common although most will give an average response time of around 40 minutes.
